This circular route stretches across 80km of lonely single track. Skirting the coast from Inverness and the Black Isle, past the seaboard of Caithness, Sutherland and Wester Ross, it offers rugged fairways, historical castles, shingle-sand beaches - not to mention countless whiskey distilleries en route. The famous hit song 500 miles by the Proclaimers even got its namesake from the route! It reaches its pinnacle at the peaks of Loch Maree. This part of the country could scarcely be more isolated or awe-inspiring.
In Yorkshire, the roads transform from moor to dale through centuries of medieval history. This land was once a backdrop for the War of the Roses, the infamous bloody struggle between the royal house of Lancaster and York. A mixture of A - and B - roads link the beautiful villages, waterfalls, reservoirs and rolling hills of northern England. Set off on the A59 from Harrogate towards the historic market town of Grassington coming back to Aysgarth Falls - the most idyllic setting for a summer ramble. This trip is perfect for fans of real ale as there are plenty of rustic traditional pubs along the way.
